Transfer and Partitioning of Heavy Metals Leached from Mswi Bottom Ash in a Column of Road Soil

چکیده
In the field of road construction with alternative materials – among which Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash the preservation of groundwater and soil quality is a major environmental issue as, under the effect of rainfall infiltration through road structure, heavy metals can leach out of the material and infiltrate into the underlying road soil. The later can act as a pollution filter and protect groundwater from contamination. Therefore, a better knowledge of the interaction between leached heavy metals and the road soil quality, from the short to the long term is needed. This study evaluated the mass transfer and the partitioning of Pb and Zn leached from a MSWI bottom ash sample and infiltrated into a column of silty soil (50 cm thick, 24 cm in diameter). The soil was compacted according to the normal Proctor reference. The percolating solution into the column was sampled at various depths for pH and concentration measurement. Vertical profiles of heavy metal content in the polluted road soil were carried out. To better understand the phenomena of sorption, the sequential extractions were carried out at different depths of the road soil.

Evaluation of Leachate Emissions from Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Bottom Ash and Crushed Rock Used in Road Construction
The use of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash in road construction may possess a risk to the environment due to the release of e.g. salt and heavy metals. In this study, two years of leachate data from a test road built of MSWI bottom ash and crushed rock in northern Sweden were evaluated. It was found that Cu, Cr, Al, Na, and Clwere leached in higher amounts from the bottom a...
متن کاملSize Distribution of Metals in Bottom Ash of Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators
Previous researches have examined the emission and management of heavy metals from municipal solid waste incinerations for compliances with regulations, and also, to address the concerns on various environmental issues. However, the size distribution of heavy metals in bottom ash has not been addressed to such extent yet. This study investigated the size distribution of bottom ash and also the ...
متن کاملAssessment of the PCDD/F fate from MSWI residue used in road construction in France.
MSWI fly ash is susceptible to contain high amount of polychlorinated dibenzo-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzo-furans. However, the use of MSWI residue for road construction started in France at a period when MSWI Bottom Ash and MSWI fly ash were not separated. From four old road sites, MSWI residue, road soils, reference soils and geo-textiles were sampled and their PCDD/F contents were ana...
متن کاملLeaching Behaviour of Elements and Evaluation of Pre-treatment Methods for Municipal Solid Waste Incinerator (MSWI) Residues in Column Leaching Tests
Two new pre-treatment methods (water-washing/carbonation and carbonation/phosphate stabilisation) of municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerator residues were evaluated by column leaching tests under aerobic conditions and anaerobic conditions (which were changed to aerobic conditions after 10 months). A mixture of bottom ash and fly ash (5:1 ratio) was pre-treated using each method. Shredded incom...
متن کاملLeachability of Heavy Metals from Lightweight Aggregates Made with Sewage Sludge and Municipal Solid Waste Incineration Fly Ash
Lightweight aggregate (LWA) production with sewage sludge and municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash is an effective approach for waste disposal. This study investigated the stability of heavy metals in LWA made from sewage sludge and MSWI fly ash. Leaching tests were conducted to find out the effects of MSWI fly ash/sewage sludge (MSWI FA/SS) ratio, sintering temperature and sinteri...
